Russell Chatham said somewhere that Roderick Haig-Brown ought to be required reading for all students. I was reminded of this recently when I came across this passage from his book "A River Never Sleeps", first published over 60 years ago:
That is all.
Assignment complete! And thank you...
ReplyDeleteIt's almost as if ol' RHB knew the internet chat board was coming.
ReplyDeleteI aspire to fancy troubles.
ReplyDeleteThank you sir; please give me another (as they say in Oxbridge).
All my casts fly true. All the fish I catch are large and beautiful. All my mates have the best jokes, the tastiest fruitcake* and a cold beer to lend at the end of the day. I'm a great angler.**
ReplyDelete*Damn, that just sounds wrong.
** At least in my own mind.
Who is that man...and why is his hand in his shorts? What is he trying to master?
ReplyDeleteIt's Haig-Brown himself, Sam. He's reaching for his clippers. He's not trying to master anything. He's just fishing. Apparently, you did not complete the assignment. You get a "zero" for the day, but I will accept your assignment late, with one letter grade docked for each day it is late.
ReplyDeleteThanks Perfessor Brayshaw....
ReplyDeleteI don't suppose you might consida him reachin for his pencil to do some ah, eh..shall we say writin?
Bite your tongue, Mr. Hall. That's Haig-Brown you're disrespecting.
