T.J.'s Tips!

Although we do like to have some fun here at The Culvert, there are some things, like protecting your skin from the sun, that are not to be joked about.

However, some of the things that hip fly fishermen wear are to be joked about - as often as possible.

  1. This website is clearly a font of leading edge techniques for safety and effectiveness on the water.

  2. Great advice again! I always laugh to see anglers wearing those muffs. I had one important question though: did you say you can't wear a wide-brim hat due to "fiscal reasons", or "physical reasons"?

  3. Lowbrow,

I'm not sure I understand the question. They're the same word, just that you're spelling it regular-like and fonetically, right?

  4. I would like to request a special episode on the flies and casting techniques that are most likely to result in a slurp. I see that Mr Brayshaw has a unique grip on that fly pole--maybe you could explain that? I'm used to seeing guys put it with the reel the other way. Another thing is about the flies. I heard English Jonny say he uses corn--is that still flyfishing if you use corn?

  5. Dear Mr. Don,

You ask a lot of very good questions. A special episode is a great idea, but unfortunately it might be some time before I can arrange that. However, if you watch some of our other videos, you might be able to get a glimpse of the casting techniques that I use. As it turns out, it's actually easier to retrieve line and reel with the reel below the fishing pole. Such is the result of being self-taught. I thank you for pointing that out.

Now, about corn. As Russell Chatham so eleguantly explains in his essay "Niblets", from his "Dark Waters" collection, you would not be the first person to be had by corn. As he explains it, it was years before he realized that "Colonel Corn" was pronounced like "Kernal Corn", and not fonetically, as it appears.

I hope that answers your questions. Please don't hesitate to keep sending in your questions and requests.

    Sincerely,

    -Brayshaw
